[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Assisting Hands of Potomac provides an informative program at Leisure World on February 18th at Montgomery County Stroke Association’s monthly meeting. Assisting Hands of Potomac will talk about the importance of having a daily dose of Creative Engagement. The talk will include a demonstration on Making Memories Together game and its use as a tool to engage those living with cognitive challenges through inter-generational play.
Creative Engagement is a perspective on caregiving that embodies the overall health and welfare of clients. Assisting Hands Home Care Potomac uses creative engagement as a way to enhance the caregiving provided to loved ones. While the overall goal of the organization is to provide carefully matched and engaged caregivers that help loved ones remain independent and safe in their own homes, the creative engagement techniques employed by Assisting Hands addresses both the mind and soul of their clients.
Creative Aging Specialist (CAS), Patricia Dubroof at Assisting Hands, has created a very special program to provide 1:1 creative engagement experience to enhance the quality of life of those living with dementia. Each CAS creates an art adventure for the client, including excursions such as a visit to a museum, theater, concert, or other facility. The CAS plans every detail of the trip and matches curriculum to enhance the experience.
Games for Brain Disorders. Additionally, in the Spring of 2019 Assisting Hands began working with the family and legacy of Dr. Gene Cohen, who was a renowned expert in the field of gerontology. He pioneered the creation of various organizations, including the National Institute of Mental Health, National Institute on Aging and the National Center for Creative Aging. Through his research, Dr. Cohen developed games designed to help those affected by various brain disorders.
Discussion Topics. The program at Leisure World will include a discussion of creative engagement and how to use the variety of aspects of creativity to enrich the lives of loved ones. We will provide both a demonstration of the game and discussion on other opportunities of Creative Engagement. We will talk about how the process not only enhances the brain health of the elderly, but simultaneously affects physical well-being. This dual influence often creates a sense of well-being and ease to those living with cognitive challenges. An important side benefit is engaging multiple generations in learning how to communicate with their loved ones.
